Abstract The SLR DJV, a Joint Venture between Jacobs and GHD, delivered the detail design for the civil and structural works and building services for Sydney Light Rail. The integrated design team faced many challenges of a technical and non-technical nature during delivery design through the heart of the Australia’s biggest and oldest city. The project involves construction of 12km of new track, 19 light rail stops, 10 traction power substations, a bridge over the Eastern Distributor Motorway, a tunnel under Moore Park and Anzac Parade, a pedestrian bridge over Anzac Parade and light rail maintenance and stabling facilities at Randwick and Lilyfield. This paper provides an overview of how the detailed design was carried out including contract arrangements, project requirements, how the SLR DJV established and developed a high performing integrated design team, the challenges faced and how they were addressed. Design of the light rail also included the pedestrianisation of George Street between Town Hall and Wynyard Station, addressing dam safety issues associated with Kensington Pond in Centennial Park and mitigating existing flood impacts in Randwick. This paper provides details of how these outcomes were achieved to create a better future for Sydney.
