Abstract
Wear and rolling contact fatigue (RCF) problems observed on typical wheel/rail systems in Chinese metros in the last 15 years are summarized and explained from the aspects of phenomena, causes and validated countermeasures. Presented wear problems along the lateral direction include wheel flange and rail side wear, and abnormal wear of wheels such as partial, hollow, groove and channel wear. Wear problems along the longitudinal are typically wheel out-of-roundness and of rail corrugation, for which four and two types are introduced, respectively. At the end, some unusual RCF problems occurring on wheel and rail surfaces are presented.
