Abstract MxV Rail (formerly TTCI) has been conducting a multi-year test to evaluate state-of-the-art wheel steels. Named the High-Performance Wheel Test 2 (HPW2), this test consists of laboratory testing, durability testing under controlled conditions, and revenue service testing. Thorough laboratory testing of specific steel properties was performed on each of the 14 steels. In the durability test, the test wheels have traveled approximately 150,000 kilometers (km). Six wheel types are being evaluated in the revenue service test. These wheels have traveled between 50,000 and 250,000 km. No wheels have been removed. Test wheels will continue to be monitored and inspected.
