Abstract During 2003, the Projects & Support Division project managed the installation of 40,000 medium duty concrete sleepers on curves on a 1:4 pattern over a 120km section of the Main Southern line between Breadalbane and Galong as part of the annual Country South Major Periodic Maintenance program. As this is the first known major partial installation of concrete sleepers in N.S.W, this discussion paper summarises the preconstruction planning, innovation and installation process used to successfully deliver the objectives of the project. The paper also overviews R|C's sleeper renewal strategy, project objectives and the benefits resulting from using medium duty concrete sleepers.
