Abstract Coalcliff is situated on the lllawarra Railway Line approximately 60 km south of Sydney. The work associated with the electrification of the lllawarra Line includes the major redevelopment and expansion of Coalcliff Yard. This yard extends between the northern portal of Coalcliff Tunnel (60.4 km) and Coalcliff Station (59.2 km). The present yard operations include:
1. A coke loading facility located on the western side of the yard with two shunting sidings.
2. A coal loading facility located on the eastern side of the yard operated by Coalcliff Colliery. This facility includes two shunting sidings approximately 400 m in length and a loading siding.
3. Through passenger and freight services.
The surrounding area of Coalcliff has a past history of major ground instability and foundation problems which is the cause of constant track maintenance works.
