Abstract This paper compares approaches used for rail network long-term planning in Switzerland and Australia, based on the author’s first-hand experience as a rail transport planner in both countries. The Swiss and Australian state and/or federal governments have recently committed to unprecedented funding for planning studies, rail infrastructure, and rolling stock. This paper highlights the challenges each country’s railways face to cope with fast-growing passenger and freight demand; their high-level approaches to defining long-term visions for passenger rail services; and the answers engineers offer for shaping each nation’s future rail networks. This paper cites similarities and differences between Switzerland’s and Australia’s processes, and identifies best practices in rail network long-term planning, articulating these around integrated approaches to meet future demand.
