Abstract National Rail Corporation Limited has been established to conduct interstate rail freight operations in Australia on a commercial basis. The Company is required to achieve business viability within a five year establishment period. Transfer of operating functions from the existing rail authorities is occurring progressively. Infrastructure is being upgraded under the "One Nation" programme, a significant feature of which is the conversion of the Melbourne-Adelaide corridor from broad gauge to standard gauge. Issues related to future strategies for infrastructure ownership are discussed.
