Abstract The Lamco rail road is situated in Liberia - West Africa. It was primarily constructed for the transport of iron ore. The railroad has been designed for heavy axleloads and been in operation since 1963. Due to the specific type of operation a number of problems were experienced with regard to rail and wheel wear, in-track welding etc. as explained in this paper. The railroad is now regarded as well suited for the purpose for which it was designed.
